A Mother's Key
I was working in our art booth at a big Morgan horse show at the Monroe, Washington Fairgrounds years ago. I had done 8-9 airbrush portraits that day already, and more orders were stacking up.
My partner, Cheryl Wofford, was handling all the people, and I was smiling and disappearing into each project as thoroughly as possible to get everything done.
Screen printed shirts and my air-brush blank shirts were stacked around us, and families were straining to get closer to watch my brazen delivery of splashes of permanent colors being applied to pristine white shirts without any assistance - everything freehand, all "on the fly". The pressure was enormous, and my shoulders and wrists were burning from the hours of effort.
A lady in a pretty, sparkly top made it to the front of the crowd, and I could see the sparkles of her shirt out of the corner of my eye as I was working. I quickly looked away from my easel to see what she had tossed onto the table beside me. It was a folded shirt in a nice plastic package - and I could see it showing part of a very detailed painting of a pretty bay Morgan mare. All that was showing was the eye. Boy - what a nice detailed job on that eye - I could never do that - my style was too free and open - and I hate taking the time to do every picky detail. "I would never be that good," I sadly thought.

Stacey Mayer was born in Seattle, Washington. She and her husband, Phil, have four wonderful daughters. Did her parents know she could draw when she was a child? Her early memories of washing crayon markings off the walls says, "yes!" Each of her daughters inherited this tendency - and has washed a lot of walls to clear up their messes, too. Today, her daughters help her with many family art projects.
Stacey grew up riding her half-Arabian gelding in the Woodinville, WA, area, before it was famous as a winery and fine restaurant destination. Her favorite horses were Arabians, Appaloosas, sport horses, race horses, and gaited horses. Her art was always filled with horses, unicorns, mermaids, and other beautiful things. Thankfully, her family was supportive of her artistic talent, and there was always paint and paper available to create and practice her artwork.
In 1980, the Arabian Horse Registry commissioned Stacey to illustrate, "Guardians of the Breed", and her artwork quickly become recognizable to the Arabian horse world. Today, owners of Stacey Mayer art include; Israeli Arabian Horse National Champions, the 1
997 winner of the European Liberty Championship, Past IAHA President Mary Ann Grimmell, Mary Lou Walberg, Ray LaCroix, Donna Hentges, Bob Battaglia, Patrick Swayze, Steve Vajdik, Joey Canda, Maj. Pat and Joanna Maxwell, Kay Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Clark Elster, Don and Twyla Lusk, Ken and Charlene Robinson, Don and Judi Peters, Scott and Jacquie Wilcox, Mrs. Patricia Fink, the winners of the Pacific Morgan Horse Show Bronze, award winners from the Reno Egyptian Event, Region 4 Champion Mare Bronze, and many more.
"If your club needs artwork, I do a limited amount of artwork for Clubs every year, and I am especially glad to help your Charity event." says Stacey.
