New Research

 I wish we could research 'why more people are not posting' on these forums......

Anybody have any ideas?

Anybody have any thing to post?

I'll start......

I'm thinking of breeding my Purebred Arabian mare to a Trakehner Stallion.

Why? Well, due to the ecconomy, I had talked myself out of breeding any mares this year. But, a friend mentioned she would like a Warmblood foal out of an Arabian mare. She likes one of my mares so I made the offer. So far, we have looked at a couple of stallions and are still debating.

Any ideas?

 Perhaps this is not the correct location to post this. But, there are not too many headings, yet....... :?

Half-Arabian/Trakhener cross horses are becoming very popular in many dressage circles, but I have learned that you must first get your Arabian mare officially inspected and approved by the Trakhener registration board if you want the resulting foal sired by an approved Trakhener stallion to be registered. In addition, the foal must also be inspected and approved before they can be permanently registered. The Trakhener registration board, both here and abroad, are very serious about the quality of their registered foals.

You would also need to do some research into the different Trakhener bloodlines as some descend directly from approved Arabian sires and would be much more likely to nick well and give you a more attractive foal. An approved, registered half-Arabian/Trakhener cross foal can sell for a seriously large amount of money even in this poor economy.

If you are standing an Arabian stallion at stud anywhere, it is seriously worth the effort to have him inspected for approval by all applicable Warmblood registries as that is a true mark of excellence and quality if he is accepted into their registries!!

Well. Sport-horses are one of the last strong markets out there, but that being said, there are tons of good sport-horse prospects looking for buyers. So, to keep the mare in production, custom foals are a great idea.

If you can both agree on a balanced stallion with more "OX" horses in his pedigree than the norm, your mare should be able to "magnetize" those ingredients for a nice foal. However, I have personally seen a few foals with the heavier heads of their warm-blood sires, and the smaller torso and frame of their dams. It simply wasn't going to be a "balanced" picture anytime soon! That said, there are better and better warm-bloods available. I don't recall the horse's name, but there was a fabulous dark bay Irish Drought horse up in Vancouver I drooled over a few years ago. Very nice "type".

Another choice, would be to find a purebred with the size and conformation sometimes found in Russians horses. (I am thinking of the offspring of * Drug, the 16 hand plus Russian-bred stallion.)

It's really a shame more sons of theRealMcCoy didn't breed on, as Mister Topper was 16.1, and a Regional Champion. I bet you recall him! I recall several sources for taller CMK and other bloodline horses. *Morafic line stallions are sometimes quite tall, especially crossed on the taller Spanish lines, *El Shaklan was 16 hands. Just wasn't a "big deal" anymore by the time he arrived at that size. When he showed against *Abdullahh at Scottsdale, wow - they were the very close to the same size.

Personally, my choice would be to find the best SE stallion available with size, plenty of bone, and substance. Whatever happened to *Bar Sam Asama? The chestnut that was at Red Cloud Arabians? He was an incredible sire, with tons of fancy, plus real substance, and a winning race horse, too.

Very interesting...

You really have to do your homework as there are a lot of rules that must be navigated in breeding for a high quality, registrable half-Arabian/Warmblood cross foal. Some Sportshorse registries don't allow any Arab/draft horse or TB/draft horse crosses to be registered. Some registries limit what types of horses may be registered as allowed out-crosses. I believe that the European-based Hanoverian and Trakhener registries are the most strict in their requirements.

Thank you. You guys are "right on" as there IS a lot to learn prior to breeding an Arabian mare to any Warmblood stallion. So far, we've been looking at lots and lots of Warmblood stallions and have not made a decision yet. My friend has decided to wait until next spring for breeding.....

We are traveling to the Arabian & Half-Arabian Sport Horse Nationals to be held the end of September 2010 in Nampa, Idaho. Perhaps we shall see some crosses there that spark our interest. Who knows?

Anyway, it is sure fun looking at other breeds of horses but.......I always come home and love my Arabians the best.

Cheers,

I was going to show a couple of my fillies at the SHN in Nampa this year, but I'm going to hold off till next year since they are only weanlings. But I think I might just take them there for the experience. I can't wait to see all the great Sport Horses out there and to show off my SH stallion's offspring! :) Hope to see you there!
